Did you know there are nearly half a million alligators living in the state of Texas? Alligators thrive in swamplands and marshes, which are prevalent throughout the southeastern part of the state. If you’re a photographer or wildlife lover, you might be wondering where to see alligators in Texas. Here’s a list of five of the best places to see these crocodilians in the state.
Eleven Mile State Park is located within the Rocky Mountains, about an hour and a half from Colorado Springs. As its name suggests, the park rests 11 miles from the town of Lake George. The Elevenmile Canyon Reservoir runs through the park, providing countless fishing opportunities. In addition, people visit this state park to enjoy a wide range of activities, including camping, hiking, kayaking, and photography.
The Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center is located in Divide, approximately 40 minutes from Colorado Springs. The wildlife center’s mission is to educate the public about the importance of conservation, specifically for coyotes, foxes, and wolves. One of the main ways the center educates the public is through the standard tour.
Pawnee National Grassland is an excellent place for photography in the Eastern Plains of Colorado. The national grassland is in Ault, which is approximately 2 hours from downtown Denver. Although the Pawnee Buttes are the main attraction at the grassland, there are innumerable opportunities for nature photography.
Palo Duro Canyon is the second largest canyon in the United States and is commonly referred to as the Grand Canyon of Texas. The canyon stretches approximately 120 miles long and has an average width of 6 miles. Visitors can access the canyon by visiting Palo Duro Canyon State Park, which is 30 minutes from downtown Amarillo, TX.
Huntsville State Park is located an hour north of downtown Houston, TX. The park encompasses more than 2,000 acres and is mostly covered in a dense forest of pine trees. Visitors can enjoy an array of activities, including camping, fishing, kayaking, swimming, and wildlife photography.
Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge is located in Los Fresnos, Texas, which is about 30 minutes from South Padre Island. The wildlife refuge is famous because it is one of the last designated conservation areas for the ocelot in the United States. Although ocelots frequent the park, visitors rarely have the chance to see these little leopards.
November is Manatee Awareness Month, which helps raise awareness for manatees and conservation efforts to protect them. Unfortunately, last year was tragic for the Florida manatee. In 2021 alone, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reported at least 1,000 manatee deaths. Even though manatees don’t have any real predators, they are dying at an alarming rate. But why?
